A Hypertrophied Eye
Overlayed 2 channel HD video installation. 2014.

A Hypertrophied Eye, NewBridge Project Space, Newcastle, UK. 2014.

A Hypertrophied Eye confronts the pervasive nature of screen-based media. The work attempts to conceal a character whose vision has come to dominate their understanding of the world.

An elaborate sound and video installation attempts to eradicate itself through phase shifting audio and overlayed inverted video. The result is an immersive installation, which teeters on the edge of existence. A tangle of equipment sustaining a limbo of almost nothingness.

A Hypertrophied Eye poses countering relationships with contemporary media – the promise of an unlimited knowledge, tempered by the anxiety of a life dominated by the screen.

It explores a society geared solely toward the pursuit of knowledge and its impact on an individual inhabiting such a hinterland – isolated and connected. Sculptural components serve to collapse the physical and temporal thresholds of on and off-screen.

A Hypertrophied Eye, forms the final part of a two-part exhibition series, the first instalment, The Problems of Explaining a Thunk was shown at Fremantle Arts centre, Perth (Australia) and explored the disjuncture between our ability to think and the capacity of media formats to accurately record, represent and convey thought.
